Make a backup
Before installing any upgrade, it’s a good idea to back up your Mac. Time Machine makes it simple, and other backup methods are also available. Learn how to back up your Mac.
Get connected
It takes time to download and install macOS, so make sure that you have a reliable Internet connection. If you're using a Mac notebook computer, plug it into AC power.
Download macOS Catalina
If you're using macOS Mojave, get macOS Catalina via Software Update: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Software Update.
Or use this link to open the macOS Catalina page on the App Store: Get macOS Catalina. Then click the Get button or iCloud download icon.
Begin installation
After downloading, the installer opens automatically.
Click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed.

If the installer asks for permission to install a helper tool, enter the administrator name and password that you use to log in to your Mac, then click Add Helper.
Allow installation to complete
Please allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart, show a progress bar, or show a blank screen several times as it installs both macOS and related updates to your Mac firmware.
Stay up to date
After installing macOS Catalina, you will be notified when updates to macOS Catalina are available. You can also use Software Update to check for updates: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Software Update.
Or get macOS Catalina automatically
If you're using OS X El Capitan v10.11.5 or later and your App Store preferences or Software Update preferences are set to download new updates when available, macOS Catalina will download conveniently in the background, making it even easier to upgrade. A notification will inform you when macOS Catalina is ready to be installed. Click Install to get started, or dismiss the notification to install later. When you're ready to install, just open the file named Install macOS Catalina from your Applications folder.

- If the installer shows a list of apps that are not optimized for your Mac, learn about 32-bit app compatibility, then choose whether to proceed with the installation.
- For the strongest security and latest features, upgrade to macOS Catalina. If you have hardware or software that isn't compatible with Catalina, you might be able to install an earlier macOS, such as Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, or El Capitan.
- You can also use macOS Recovery to reinstall macOS.
Important Notes:
- Using APFS is REQUIRED in Mojave in order to receive system updates via the normal Software Update method. If you choose to continue using macOS Extended (Journaled) as your filesystem type, you will NOT receive System Updates via System Preferences. If you are not using APFS, you can follow the 10.14.1 installation steps below.
- After applying ANY system update via Software Update, re-applying post-install patches using your Mojave Patcher installer volume will most likely be necessary. If you install a software update and the system fails to boot afterwards, this is what needs to be done.
Macos Catalina Download
10.14.610.14.6 can be updated normally via Software Update if using an APFS volume, and will need to be patched using an installer volume created with Mojave Patcher version 1.3.2 or later after installing.
10.14.5
10.14.5 can be updated normally via Software Update if using an APFS volume, and will need to be patched using an installer volume created with Mojave Patcher version 1.3.1 or later after installing.
10.14.4
10.14.4 adds new changes that ARE NOT patchable by the post-install tool of Mojave Patcher v1.2.3 and older! Before updating to 10.14.4, you you will need to use the latest Mojave Patcher version to create a new installer volume, using the 10.14.4 installer app. Then, update to 10.14.4, either by installing via Software Update, or by just using the installer volume you've created to install.
10.14.3
Catalina For Old Macs
If you are currently running 10.14.1 or 10.14.2, you can simply use the Software Update pane of System Preferences (if using APFS) to apply the 10.14.3 update. Once the update is installed, you will most likely need to re-apply post-install patches to get the system to boot again. This process is detailed in steps 8 - 10 above. If you are currently running 10.14.0, you'll need to proceed with the 10.14.1 update method described below.
10.14.2
If you are currently running 10.14.1, you can simply use the Software Update pane of System Preferences (if using APFS) to apply the 10.14.2 update. Once the update is installed, you will most likely need to re-apply post-install patches to get the system to boot again. This process is detailed in steps 8 - 10 above. If you are currently running 10.14.0, or are using a non-AFPS volume, you'll need to proceed with the 10.14.1 update method described below.

The Mojave 10.14.1 update does NOT install properly on unsupported machines, and could result in an unbootable OS. If you want to install the 10.14.1 update (and are not currently running 10.14.1), perform the following steps:
• Download the latest version of Mojave Patcher
• Download the installer using the Tools menu of Mojave Patcher
• Create a patched USB installer
• Boot from that, and install 10.14.1 onto the volume containing an older release.
• Once done, apply the post-install patches, and you should now be on 10.14.1.

Before proceeding next, please make a complete backup of your current macOS version running on your machine. This method requires time and there are still some bugs and you also see something missing.
Requirements for Installing macOS Catalina on unsupported mac
- Access to a Mac using which we will create a bootable macOS Catalina installer USB.
- At least 16GB storage of USB in MacOS Extended Journal format.
- Backup of the target machine.
Now, if you have read all the above-mentioned things and you are ready to install macOS Catalina on unsupported mac then follow the give steps.
If your device is still compatible with macOS Catalina patcher then follow the given steps.
- At the very first, you need to Download the latest version of macOS Catalina Patcher on the real macOS device. Always use the latest version of this patcher because they have bug fixes for you.
- Open the macOS Catalina Patcher app and hit continue button on your screen.
- At this stage, we are going to click at “Download a Copy” button because we need to create a bootable USB.
- Depending on the speed of internet the installer of 8GB will download when you hit Start download button.
- Once downloaded, you will see different installation methods. Just, insert the USB in your MacBook and click on “Create a Bootable Installer”.
- Once USB Drive is ready, plug-in this USB into the unsupported mac where you want to install macOS Catalina.
- Power on the machine and keep holding the Option key on mac. You will see the Startup Manager on Screen. Using arrow keys, click on the USB drive you have created.
- At this step, you are in macOS recovery and you need to format your internal drive with APFS format on which you are going to install macOS Catalina using patcher.
- Now just wait ‘Reinstall macOS’ option to start the installation process. This will take some hour. If you see any command lines, ignore them because this is normal.
- Once the installation is done, shutdown your mac. Again, boot it using USB drive. This step is important because we need to verify patches.
- At the macOS recovery screen, hit ‘macOS Post Install’ option. Let the MacBook select the right patches for you. Click Apply Patches and sit back.
- At the final step, hit ‘Force Cache Rebuild’ and click Restart.
- Finally, you will see the macOS Catalina Setup screen on your mac.
- Setup the device according to your need. You will see ‘Setting up Mac’ screen before the desktop.
- As a result, you have successfully installed and booted macOS Catalina on unsupported mac.
